What do y'all think about Emo bands that use clean guitar tones/hammering techniques? You know, all those bands that mix really soft clean music with emotional vocals of some sort?
I think they're fascinating. There are so many different types of emotional music and I just want to try my hand at all of them. Unfortunately, sometimes when we go down certain stylistic routes, some people love our choice, and others can't stand it. For instance, my latest soft song is so soft that many people might enjoy and resonate with it easily, but then I give it a punk "flavor" my yelling out some lyrics emotionally, and it immediately becomes a big "no" for a lot of people, and a "ehhhhh" for a bunch more.
Which makes me kinda sad, since I guess I want as many people to like my music as possible. But I guess I'd rather have 20 diehard fans than 100 "whatever" fans.
I think the people who like it will like it all the more (and the people who hate it or were liking the gentle vibe will hate it all the more).
Plus, I get the satisfaction of doing exactly what I wanted to do with a song, regardless of the opinions of anyone else.
But it's so interesting how just a vocal stylistic choice can basically change the subgenre or even genre classification of a song. A clean guitar instrumental with a "whoa-oo-whoa" ending could be Coldplay, MCR, or ADTR, so to speak, and many others, all depending on your stylistic choice of vocals. And it's so funny how if you go one route, you alienate yourself from certain people, while if you go another you endear yourselves to them... All the while, the SONG hasn't really changed, just your stylistic choice of vocal.
That's one thing I love experimenting with. Different vocal tones.
I like to do my hi, croaky mid-range (for me) punk voice (sounds kinda whiny I guess), I like to throw my voice to make it sound deeper or "elvis-ey", in a whole bunch of varying intensities. I like to just sing like it's just me. I like to make my normal voice sound a little more nasal so it sounds higher and more punkish (think Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!). I like to go super high and do some crazy mixed/falsetto type screams.
There's so many different ways you can throw your voice, and so many different reactions they're likely to invoke among people.
Let's just hope I can get one down that's okay for worship minister 😂haha!
